Ibn Umar used to lease out his land during the time of Abu Bakr and Umar and Uthman, and during part of Muawiya's rule. He said, "If I wished, I could say even during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Then, toward the end of Muawiya's rule, a hadith from Rafi bin Khadij reached him, so he went, and I went with him, and he asked him about it.Rafi replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the leasing of farmland."So Ibn Umar stopped leasing his land, and whenever he was asked about it after that, he would say, "Ibn Khadij claims that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the leasing of farmland."
Its isnad is sahih. It is a repetition of 4504 with the same meaning, but the apparent sense here is that Nafi's statement, "and if I wished I would say, 'in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ'" reflects his own uncertainty about attributing this part of the hadith to the Prophet, and that it is mursal, since he did not mention that he narrated it from Ibn Umar. The previous narration removes this doubt about the attribution and dispels the suspicion of it being mursal, because there he narrated it from Ibn Umar, that land used to be leased out in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and so on. See 4586.
