Its isnad is sahih. This is also one of the narrations of the story of Ibn Umar's divorce mentioned in the previous hadith, and it too is concise, indeed even more concise. It will come at 5524 with this same isnad, related in full and clearly, stating that the Prophet ordered him to take her back, then if he wished he could divorce her, and if he wished he could keep her. At the end of it, Ibn Umar said, "And the Prophet ﷺ recited, 'O Prophet, when you divorce women, divorce them at the beginning of their waiting period.'" Ibn Jurayj said, "And I heard Mujahid recite it the same way."This longer version was also related by Muslim (1:423) through Hajjaj bin Muhammad from Ibn Jurayj. This narration, which appears on its surface to represent a reading with the wording "at the beginning of their waiting period," was mentioned by Ibn Khalawayh in his book on irregular readings, presenting it as a Quranic reading and attributing it to the Prophet ﷺ, Ibn Abbas, and Mujahid. In my view this is not sound work, for this is not a Quranic reading at all, and it is not permissible to take such a thing at face value in a matter like this.Abu Hayan said in his tafsir Bahr (8/271), "What has been related from a group of the companions and the successors ﷺ, that they read it as 'divorce them at the beginning of their waiting period,' and from Abdullah, 'before their purification,' is by way of explanation, not as an actual recitation of the Quran, since it contradicts the universally agreed-upon text of the Quran accepted by Muslims east and west." The word qubul is with damma on the qaf and the ba.Ibn Athir said, "'Qubul' of their waiting period, and in another version, 'at the qubul of their purification,' meaning at its onset and beginning, when she is able to enter the waiting period and begin it, so that it is counted for her, and that occurs during the state of purity. It is said, 'That happened at the qubul of winter,' meaning at its onset."
