I asked Abdullah bin Umar, "Should I recite behind the imam?"He replied, "The imam's recitation is sufficient for you."I said, "What about the two rakahs of Fajr? Should I lengthen the recitation in them?"He answered, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray the night prayer two rakahs at a time."I said, "I only asked you about the two rakahs of Fajr."He responded, "You are dense. Don't you see that I am beginning the hadith from the start? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray the night prayer two rakahs at a time, and when he feared dawn was approaching, he would pray a single witr rakah. Then he would lay down his head, and if you wish you may say he slept, and if you wish you may say he did not sleep. Then he would rise to pray those two rakahs while the call to prayer was in his ears. So how long could they be?"Then I asked, "If a man bequeaths wealth to be spent in the path of Allah, may it be spent on the Hajj?"He said, "If you were to do so, it would indeed be in the path of Allah."I asked, "If a man misses a rakah with the imam, should he stand to make it up before the imam stands, once the imam has given the salam?"He replied, "When the imam gave the salam, he would stand."I asked, "What about a man who takes on debts greater than his wealth?"He said, "Every treacherous person will have a banner at his backside on the Day of Resurrection, in proportion to his treachery."
Its isnad is sahih. Ibrahim bin Habib bin Shaheed is trustworthy, Nasai and Daraqutni and others confirmed his reliability, and Bukhari mentioned him in al-Kabir 1/1/28. Abu Habib bin Shaheed al-Basri, his reliability was already confirmed at 1742, and we add that Bukhari also mentioned him at 1/2/317-318. In H it appears as Ibrahim bin Wahb bin Shaheed, which is an error, and we have corrected it from K and M. The hadith is given at greater length at 4860, 5049, and see also 5088. In the Muwatta 1:107-108, Malik reported from Nafi that Ubaydullah bin Umar, when asked, "Does anyone recite behind the imam?" would say, "When one of you prays behind the imam, the imam's recitation suffices him, but when he prays alone, let him recite." He said, and Abdullah bin Umar would not recite behind the imam. This is Ibn Umar's own view, and what is firmly established as sahih is that one does not recite behind the imam except for the Opening Chapter of the Book, whether the imam recites aloud or silently. It is possible that Ibn Umar's statement here concerns reciting what is beyond the Opening Chapter of the Book."Al-dakhm" means massive in build, abundant in flesh, as though he is alluding indirectly to his corpulence. I have not come across this figurative usage in any of the references I have consulted.
