The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray during the night in pairs of two rakahs, then conclude with a single witr rakah at the end of the night. He would then rise as though the call to prayer and its iqamah were ringing in his ears.
حدثنا يزيد أخبرنا شعبة عن أنس بن سيرين
كان رسول الله ﷺ يصلي الليل مثنى مثنى ثم يوتر بركعة من آخر الليل ثم يقوم كأن الأذان والإقامة في أذنيه
