We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the morning of Arafah. Some of us were calling out the takbir, and some were calling out the talbiyah. As for us, we were calling out the takbir. He said, I said, "How astonishing of you all! How did you not ask him what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself did?"

Its isnad is sahih. Umar bin Husayn Makki, the judge of Madinah, is a trustworthy tabii. He narrated from Ibn Umar, and Nasai and others confirmed his reliability. Yahya bin Saeed counted him among the jurists of Madinah, and Malik praised him greatly. This isnad involves a descent through the levels of narrators, for Abdul-Aziz bin Abdullah bin Abu Salama narrates from his father, but here he narrated from him through an intermediary, Umar bin Husayn. And Umar bin Husayn narrates from Ibn Umar, but here he narrated from him through two intermediaries. And Abdullah bin Abu Salama also narrates from Ibn Umar, but here he narrated from him through an intermediary. The hadith appears at greater length at 4458 and 4733.We noted at the first of these two places that Muslim narrated it through the route of Umar bin Husayn, and it appears in Sahih Muslim 1:363, from Muhammad bin Hatim, Harun bin Abdullah, and Yaqub Dawraqi, all three of them from Yazid bin Harun, the teacher of Ahmad here, with this same isnad.Umar bin Husayn, in [manuscript] j it reads Amr bin Husayn, which is an error. We corrected it based on [manuscripts] k and m and the reference works on the narrators and the hadith. In [manuscript] j it reads "do we then say Allah is greatest" with the fa omitted, which is an error. It is present in [manuscripts] k and m.The one who says "How strange of you..." and so on is Abdullah bin Abu Salama, because in Muslim's version it reads, "By Allah, how strange of you! Why did you not say to him, What did you see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do?"
