The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made an arrangement with the people of Khaybar that they would receive half of whatever the land produced of crops or dates. He used to give each of his wives one hundred wasqs every year, eighty wasqs of dates and twenty wasqs of barley. When Umar bin Khattab assumed leadership, he divided Khaybar and gave the wives of the Prophet ﷺ the choice between having a portion of the land allotted to them or having the wasqs guaranteed to them every year. They differed in their choices. Some of them chose to have the land allotted to them, while others chose the wasqs. Hafsa and Ayesha were among those who chose the wasqs.
Its isnad is sahih. Muslim narrated it similarly, 1:456, from the hadith of Ali bin Mushir from Ubaydullah, then he narrated it through Ibn Numayr from Ubaydullah, then he narrated it with an addition through Usama bin Zayd Laythi from Nafi. Abu Dawud likewise narrated it, 3:118-119, through Usama. Bukhari narrated it similarly but abridged, 5:10-11, through Anas bin Iyad from Ubaydullah. For this reason I consider that Munziri fell short when he attributed Abu Dawud's hadith to Muslim alone.Al-wasq, with a fatha on the waw and a sakin on the sin, Ibn Athir said, is sixty saa. It equals three hundred and twenty pounds according to the people of Hijaz, and four hundred and eighty pounds according to the people of Iraq, given their differing estimates of the measure of the saa and the mudd. The basic meaning of al-wasq is a load.In [manuscript] Qaf, their understanding and its source differed, and it can be explained grammatically, but the feminine pronoun is more eloquent and more fitting, so we have retained what is in [manuscript] Kaf, which agrees with the other narrations. The beginning of this hadith has already passed at 4663.
