The Jews brought to the Prophet ﷺ a man and a woman from among them who had committed adultery. He asked, "What do you find in your Book?"They replied, "We blacken their faces and disgrace them."He said, "You have lied. It contains the ruling of stoning. Bring the Torah and recite it, if you are truthful."So they brought the Torah, along with one of their reciters, a one-eyed man called Ibn Suriya. He began reading until, when he reached a particular passage, he placed his hand over it.He was told, "Lift your hand."He lifted his hand, and there it was, plainly visible. He said, or they said, "Muhammad, it does contain the ruling of stoning, but we used to conceal it among ourselves."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then ordered that the two be stoned, and they were stoned. The narrator said, I saw him leaning over her, shielding her from the stones with his own body.
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Both Bukhari and Muslim narrated it, but the phrase "a one-eyed reader among them, called Ibn Suraya" is an addition found only in Ahmad, as in al-Muntaqa 4019, 4020. See also what came before in Musnad Ibn Abbas 2368."We will blacken their faces" means we will smear them with soot, with a dammah on the sin and a lightened kha, which is the blackness of a cooking pot or of charcoal.
