The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever takes," or he said, "keeps a dog that is neither a hunting dog nor a sheepdog will have two qirats deducted from his reward each day."It was said to him, "Abu Hurairah includes the farming dog as well."He replied, "What would Abu Hurairah have to do with farming?"

عن النبي ﷺ أنه قال من اتخذ أو قال اقتنى كلبا ليس بضار ولا كلب ماشية نقص من أجره كل يوم قيراطان فقيل له إن أبا هريرة يقول وكلب حرث فقال أنى لأبي هريرة حرث
Its isnad is sahih. Malik narrated it in Muwatta 3:138 from Nafi, without mentioning Abu Hurairah. Muslim narrated it in 1:462 through Malik's route, and he also narrated it through the route of Salim bin Abdullah bin Umar from his father. At the end of it, it says, Abdullah [meaning Ibn Umar] said, Abu Hurairah said, "Or a farm dog." He also narrated it through the route of Salim from his father, and at the end of it, it says, Salim said, Abu Hurairah used to say, "Or a watchdog," and he was a man of farming. The hadith of Abu Hurairah was also narrated through the route of Zuhri from Abu Salama from Abu Hurairah, and at the end of it, it says, Zuhri said, Abu Hurairah's statement was mentioned to Ibn Umar, and he said, "May Allah have mercy on Abu Hurairah, he was a man of crops."These narrations show that Ibn Umar was not rejecting Abu Hurairah's narration, rather each of them was narrating what he had heard. In fact, Ibn Umar himself narrated from Abu Hurairah the addition that Abu Hurairah added in his narration. These truthful and sincere men would not accuse one another of lying, rather their hallmark was truthfulness and trustworthiness.Rad, "not harmful," Ibn Athir said, meaning a dog trained for hunting. It is said dariya al-kalb and adrahu sahibuhu, meaning he trained it and incited it toward it. Its plural is dawari.
