The Prophet ﷺ was asked what a person in the state of ihram may kill. He said, "He may kill the scorpion, the mouse, the kite, the crow, and the rabid dog."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. It was narrated by the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), Abu Dawud, Nasai, and Ibn Majah with the same meaning, as noted in Muntaqa 2494. It was likewise narrated by Malik in Muwatta 1:327. See also Awn al-Mabud 2:107-108.Al-fuwaysiqah refers to the mouse. The root of fusuq is deviation from what is upright and just. The mouse was called fuwaysiqah, a diminutive form of fasiqah (a deviant little creature), because it comes out of its hole against people and causes mischief. So said Ibn Athir.
