A man asked Abu Musa al-Ashari about a woman who died leaving behind a daughter, a son's daughter, and a sister.Abu Musa replied, "Half goes to the daughter, and half goes to the sister." Then he said, "Go to Ibn Masud, for he will surely agree with my ruling."So they went to Ibn Masud and told him what Abu Musa had said.Ibn Masud responded, "I would be misguided then, and not among the rightly guided. I will rule on this matter according to the ruling of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Shuba said, "I found this phrase recorded as follows, 'I will rule on this matter according to the ruling of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The daughter receives half, the son's daughter receives one sixth to complete two thirds, and whatever remains goes to the sister.'"So they went to Abu Musa and informed him of what Ibn Masud had said.Abu Musa replied, "Do not ask me about anything as long as this learned scholar is among you."

سأل رجل أبا موسى الأشعري عن امرأة تركت ابنتها وابنة ابنها وأختها فقال النصف للابنة وللأخت النصف وقال ائت ابن مسعود فإنه سيتابعني قال فأتوا ابن مسعود فأخبروه بقول أبي موسى فقال لقد ضللت إذا وما أنا من المهتدين لأقضين فيها بقضاء رسول الله ﷺ قال شعبة وجدت هذا الحرف مكتوبا لأقضين فيها بقضاء رسول الله ﷺ للابنة النصف ولابنة الابن السدس تكملة الثلثين وما بقي فللأخت فأتوا أبا موسى فأخبروه بقول ابن مسعود فقال أبو موسى لا تسألوني عن شيء ما دام هذا الحبر بين أظهركم
