While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Mecca, and he was sitting among a group of his companions, he said, "Let one of you stand up with me, but no man should stand with me who has in his heart even an atom's weight of treachery."So I stood up with him, taking along a water-skin which I assumed contained nothing but water. I set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until, when we reached the upper part of Mecca, I saw dark figures gathered together. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ drew a line for me on the ground and said, "Stand here until I come back to you."So I stood there, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went forward toward them. I saw them rising up toward him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spent a long part of the night with them in conversation, until he came back to me at dawn.He said to me, "Have you been standing all this time, Ibn Masud?"I replied, "Messenger of Allah, didn't you tell me to stand here until you came back?"Then he said to me, "Do you have any water for ablution with you?"I said, "Yes," and I opened the water-skin, only to find that it contained nabidh.I said to him, "Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I took the water-skin assuming it contained nothing but water, but it turns out to be nabidh."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A wholesome date and pure water."Then he performed ablution from it. When he stood up to pray, two figures from among them came up to him and said, "Messenger of Allah, we would like you to lead us in our prayer."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arranged them in a row behind him and led us in prayer. When he finished, I asked him, "Who were those, Messenger of Allah?"He said, "These are the jinn of Nasibin. They came to bring disputes before me concerning matters that had arisen among them, and they asked me for provisions, so I provided them."I said to him, "Do you have anything with you, Messenger of Allah, that you could provide them with?"He said, "I provided them with this, that they will find every piece of dung restored to barley, and every bone they find will be fully covered with flesh."It was at that point that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade cleansing oneself with dung or bone.
Its isnad is daif, due to the unknown status of Abu Zayd, the freedman of Amr bin Hurayth, as we said at 3811. Here in the two original manuscripts he is mentioned by the name Yazid, so perhaps the word denoting the kunyah was mistakenly dropped by the copyists, as is indicated by the statement of Majma al-Zawaid that follows. The hadith appears in 8:313–314, where it says, Ahmad narrated it, and it contains Abu Zayd, the freedman of Amr bin Hurayth, who is unknown. It also says, Abu Dawud and others narrated it in abridged form. This refers to hadith 3810, and see also 3788, 4149, 4296, 4353, 4375.Rajah means rajee, that is, dung, excrement, and the like, because it has "returned" from its original state after having been food, fodder, or something else.In manuscript H it reads "from Abu Ishaq" instead of "Ibn Ishaq," and the correct reading has been confirmed from manuscript K.
