I heard a man recite a verse in a way that differed from how I had heard the Prophet ﷺ recite it. So I took hold of him and brought him to the Prophet ﷺ. I noticed displeasure on the Prophet's ﷺ face, and he said, "Both of you are doing well. Do not differ." To the best of my knowledge, Masaar said that it was mentioned in the narration, "Do not differ, for those before you differed and were destroyed."
حدثنا هاشم حدثنا شعبة عن عبد الملك بن ميسرة قال سمعت النزال بن سبرة الهلالي يحدث
سمعت رجلا قرأ آية قد سمعت من النبي ﷺ خلافها فأخذته فجئت به إلى النبي ﷺ قال فعرفت في وجه النبي ﷺ الكراهية قال كلاكما محسن لا تختلفوا أكبر علمي قال مسعر قد ذكر فيه لا تختلفوا إن من كان قبلكم اختلفوا فأهلكهم
Its isnad is sahih, and it is an abridgement of 4322. The narration of Masaar, to which Shuba referred here, has already appeared at 3724, and a reference to it has also already appeared at 3907. Shuba narrated it from Abdul-Malik bin Maysara, and he was uncertain whether he had heard the wording "do not differ" from him directly, but he had heard this phrase from his colleague Masaar, from Abdul-Malik, so he stated it with certainty.
