A man among those who lived before you was a king in his kingdom. He reflected and realized that all of this would be cut off from him, and that what he was occupied with had distracted him from the worship of his Lord. So one night he slipped away and stole out from his palace, and by morning he found himself in the kingdom of another. He came to the seashore, where he worked making bricks for wages. He would eat from what he earned and give the rest in charity. He continued like this until news of his situation, his worship, and his virtue reached the king of that land. The king sent for him to come, but he refused to come. The king sent for him again, and again, but he refused, saying, "What does he want with me, and what have I to do with him?"So the king mounted his horse and rode out to him. When the man saw him, he turned and fled. When the king saw this, he galloped after him but could not catch him.The king called out to him, "Servant of Allah, you have nothing to fear from me."So the man stopped until the king caught up with him. The king asked him, "Who are you, may Allah have mercy on you?"He replied, "I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so, the king of such-and-such a land. I reflected on my situation and realized that what I was in would be cut off, and that it had distracted me from the worship of my Lord. So I left it and came here to worship my Lord ."The king said, "You are no more in need of what you have done than I am."Then he dismounted from his riding beast, set it free, and followed him. The two of them worshipped Allah
together, and they prayed to Allah that He would cause them both to die together. So they died.He said, "If you were at Ramlat Misr, I would show you their graves, marked with the description that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us."
