I asked Ibn Masud, "Did any of you accompany the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the night of the jinn?"He replied, "None of us accompanied him, but we lost him one night. We said, 'He has been assassinated. He has been snatched away. What has happened to him?' We spent the worst night any people ever spent. When morning approached," or he said, "in the predawn hours, suddenly there he was, coming from the direction of Hira. We said, 'Messenger of Allah,' and they mentioned to him what they had been going through. He said, 'A summoner from the jinn came to me, so I went with him and recited the Quran to them.'"He continued, "Then he took us along and showed us their traces and the traces of their fires."Shaybi said, "They asked him for provision."Ibn Abu Zaida said, Amir said, "On that night they asked him for provision, and they were among the jinn of al-Jazirah. He said, 'Every bone over which the name of Allah has been mentioned will fall into your hands with more flesh on it than it ever had, and every piece of dung or droppings is fodder for your animals. So do not use them for cleaning yourselves, for they are the provision of your brothers among the jinn.'"
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Muslim narrated it in 1:131 through Dawud, from Amir, who is Shaybi, with the same wording. Tirmidhi likewise narrated it in 4:183 and said, this is a hasan sahih hadith. Abu Dawud narrated a brief portion of it in 1:32. See also 3788, 3810, and see also Nasb Raya 1:139-141."Ughtila" (was secretly killed) comes from "ghilah," which is a noun pattern with the first letter vowelled as "i," derived from "ightiyal" (assassination), meaning that a person is deceived and killed in a place where no one sees him. "Ustuteera" (was snatched away) means he was taken away swiftly, as though a bird had carried him off. Both verbs are constructed in the passive voice, with the doer left unnamed.
