A red wind blew in Kufa, and a man came who could only repeat, "Abdullah bin Masud, the Hour has come!"Abdullah bin Masud had been reclining, but he sat up and said, "The Hour will not arrive until inheritances are no longer divided and no one rejoices over war booty."Then he said, gesturing with his hand toward Sham, "An enemy will gather against the people of Islam, and the people of Islam will gather against them."I asked, "Do you mean the Romans?"He said, "Yes. At that battle there will be a fierce assault. The Muslims will send forward a detachment pledged to death, not to return unless victorious. They will fight until night separates them, and both sides will withdraw, neither having gained victory, and the detachment will be wiped out. Then the Muslims will send forward another detachment pledged to death, not to return unless victorious. They will fight until night separates them, and both sides will withdraw, neither having gained victory, and the detachment will be wiped out. Then the Muslims will send forward another detachment pledged to death, not to return unless victorious. They will fight until evening, and both sides will withdraw, neither having gained victory, and the detachment will be wiped out. When the fourth day comes, the rest of the people of Islam will charge against them, and Allah will turn defeat upon the enemy. They will be slaughtered in such numbers that"—he either said, "the like of it has never been seen," or, "we have never seen its like"—"so much so that a bird passing alongside them will not get past them before it falls dead. The sons of one father, who had numbered a hundred, will count themselves and find only a single man left alive. So over what spoils could anyone rejoice, or what inheritance could be divided? While they are in this state, they will hear of an even greater multitude. A cry will reach them that the Dajjal has appeared among their families left behind. They will throw down what is in their hands and rush back, sending ten horsemen ahead as a scouting party."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I know their names, the names of their fathers, and the colors of their horses. They will be the finest horsemen on the face of the earth that day."
Its isnad is sahih. It is a longer version of hadith 3643 with this same chain, and we noted there that Muslim narrated it at length. We add here that Hakim narrated it in al-Mustadrak 4:476-477 at length, via Ibn Ulaya from Ayub, and said, "Sahih according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs, though they did not include it," and Dhahabi agreed with him.We point out an error on their part, that Muslim did narrate it, so it is not something missing from the Sahihayn. Here in manuscript ح there is an addition, "an Aseer," inserted between Humayd bin Hilal and Abu Qatada, which is a pure error, and we corrected it based on manuscript ك.al-Shurta, with damma on the shin and sukun on the ra, means the first group of the army to witness the battle.Yafee means "returns."Nahada ilayhim, Ibn Athir said, "Nahada al-qawm li-aduwwihim" means they stood firm against their enemy and set about fighting him.al-Dabra, with fatha on the dal and ba, and also with sukun on the ba, means defeat in battle, and it is derived from al-idbar (retreat).Fa-yataadu banu al-ab means "the sons of the [same] father count on one another."Fa-la yajidunahu in manuscript ح reads "wa-la yajidunahu," and we kept what is in manuscript ك.Yuqsimu in manuscript ح reads "bil-Qasim."Bi-nasin akthar in manuscript ح reads "bi-nasin huwa akthar," but the word "huwa" is an error and is not found in manuscript ك, so we removed it.
