I caught the end of his speech, and he was saying, "Messenger of Allah, I am a man who has been given a share of good looks as you can see, and I do not like that anyone should surpass me by even a pair of sandal-straps or more. Is that not arrogance?"He replied, "That is not arrogance. Arrogance is rejecting the truth and despising people."
حدثنا ابن أبي عدي ويزيد قالا أخبرنا ابن عون عن عمرو بن سعيد عن حميد بن عبد الرحمن قال
كنت لا أحبس عن ثلاث وقال ابن عون فنسي عمرو واحدة ونسيت أنا أخرى وبقيت هذه عن النجوى عن كذا وعن كذا قال فأتيته وعنده مالك بن مرارة الرهاوي قال فأدركت من آخر حديثه وهو يقول يا رسول الله إني رجل قد قسم لي من الجمال ما ترى فما أحب أن أحدا من الناس فضلني بشراكين فما فوقهما أفليس ذلك هو البغي قال ليس ذلك بالبغي ولكن البغي من سفه الحق أو بطر الحق وغمط الناس
