We were sitting with Abdullah, and Zayd bin Hudayr was with us, when Khabab came in to see us.Khabab said, "Abu Abdul-Rahman, do all of these men recite the way you recite?"Abdullah replied, "If you wish, I will order one of them to recite for you."Khabab said, "Yes, please."So Abdullah said to me, "Recite."Ibn Hudayr objected, "You order him to recite when he is not the best reciter among us?"Abdullah said, "By Allah, if you wish, I will tell you what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said about your people and his people."So I recited fifty verses from Surah Maryam.Khabab said, "You have recited well."Abdullah said, "I do not recite anything but that he has recited it too."Then Abdullah said to Khabab, "Is it not time for this ring to be cast off?"Khabab replied, "You will not see it on me after today." The ring was made of gold.
حدثنا يعلى حدثنا الأعمش عن إبراهيم
كنا جلوسا عند عبد الله ومعنا زيد بن حدير فدخل علينا خباب فقال يا أبا عبد الرحمن أكل هؤلاء يقرأ كما تقرأ فقال إن شئت أمرت بعضهم فقرأ عليك قال أجل فقال لي اقرأ فقال ابن حدير تأمره يقرأ وليس بأقرئنا فقال أما والله إن شئت لأخبرنك ما قال رسول الله ﷺ لقومك وقومه قال فقرأت خمسين آية من مريم فقال خباب أحسنت فقال عبد الله ما أقرأ شيئا إلا هو قرأه ثم قال عبد الله لخباب أما آن لهذا الخاتم أن يلقى قال أما إنك لا تراه علي بعد اليوم والخاتم ذهب
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Bukhari narrated it, 8:77-78, from Abdan from Abu Hamza from Amash. Then he said after it, "Ghundar narrated it from Shubah." Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari [meaning, from Amash with the aforementioned chain, and Abu Naeem connected it in the Mustakhraj through the route of Ahmad bin Hanbal, "Muhammad bin Jafar, who is Ghundar, narrated to us," with this chain of his. It seems to be in Zuhd by Ahmad, for otherwise I have not seen it in Musnad Ahmad except through the route of Yaala bin Ubayd from Amash, meaning this same chain.Zayd bin Hudayr al-Asadi was a follower, as is evident from this hadith, and he has no narration or mention in the Six Books except in this place. His brother Ziyad bin Hudayr was a well known follower, mentioned earlier at 3603.Khabab is Ibn al-Arat, the well known companion.As for Khabab's statement, "By Allah, if you wish, I will tell you what the Messenger of Allah said about your people and his people," Hafiz said, He seems to be alluding to the Prophet's praise of Nakha, since Alqama was from Nakha, and to his criticism of Banu Assad, since Ziyad bin Hudayr was from Assad.As for his praise of Nakha, it is found in what Ahmad [Musnad 3826] and Bazzar narrated with a hasan chain from Ibn Masud, who said, "I saw the Messenger of Allah praying for this clan of Nakha, or praising them, until I wished I were one of them."As for his criticism of Banu Assad, it was mentioned earlier in Manaqib, in the hadith of Abu Hurairah and others, that Juhayna and others were better than Banu Assad and Ghatfan.His words, "I never recited anything but he had recited it," appear in K as "except that he would recite," and in Bukhari as "except that he would recite it." The addition of the word [indeed you] we have added from K and from Bukhari.
