Abu Majid reported,

A man came to Abdullah and mentioned the story, then began narrating about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, "The first man to have his hand cut off in Islam," or he said, "from among the Muslims, was a man brought to the Prophet ﷺ."It was said, "Messenger of Allah, this man has stolen."The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ darkened as if dust had been thrown on it.Some of them said, "Messenger of Allah," meaning, "What is the matter with you?"He replied, "What should prevent me, when you are helpers of Satan against your companion? Allah is Forgiving and loves forgiveness, but it is not fitting for a person in authority, when a prescribed punishment is brought before him, to do anything but carry it out."Then he recited, "And let them pardon and overlook. Would you not love that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful" [Nur 24:22].Yahya said, "Sufyan dictated this to us as dictation."

جاء رجل إلى عبد الله فذكر القصة وأنشأ يحدث عن رسول الله ﷺ قال إن أول رجل قطع في الإسلام أو من المسلمين رجل أتي به النبي ﷺ فقيل يا رسول الله إن هذا سرق فكأنما أسف وجه رسول الله ﷺ رمادا فقال بعضهم يا رسول الله أي يقول ما لك فقال وما يمنعني وأنتم أعوان الشيطان على صاحبكم والله عز وجل عفو يحب العفو ولا ينبغي لوالي أمر أن يؤتى بحد إلا أقامه ثم قرأ {وليعفوا وليصفحوا ألا تحبون أن يغفر الله لكم والله غفور رحيم} قال يحيى أملاه علينا سفيان إملاء
