They were with Ibn Masud when the time for prayer came. Alqama and Aswad stepped back, but Ibn Masud took them by their hands and placed one of them on his right and the other on his left. Then they bowed and placed their hands on their knees, but he struck their hands away. He then joined his palms together, interlocked his fingers, and placed them between his thighs, saying, "I saw the Prophet ﷺ do this."

Its isnad is sahih. Ibn Aswad is Abdul-Rahman bin Aswad bin Yazid.Muslim narrated something similar in meaning at 1:150 through Ubaydullah bin Musa, from Israil, from Mansur, from Ibrahim, from Alqama and Aswad.Abu Dawud at 1:237 and Nasai at 1:128-129 narrated from it the position of the imam when there are three people, through Harun bin Antara, from Abdul-Rahman bin Aswad, from his father. In Nasai it is from Aswad and Alqama.Munziri said (number 584), "In its isnad is Harun bin Antara, and some scholars have criticized him. Abu Umar Sari said, this hadith cannot be soundly established as a raised report, and the sahih position among them is that it stops at Ibn Masud, meaning that he prayed in this manner with Alqama and Aswad."What Abu Umar pointed to here, Muslim recorded in his Sahih, that Ibn Masud prayed with Alqama and Aswad, and it is a stopped report. Abu Umar bin Abdul-Barr erred here, and Munziri followed him in this error, for the hadith we pointed to in Sahih Muslim ends with, "When he finished praying, he said, 'This is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do it.'" This is explicit in making it a raised report. Here it is again in the Musnad, raised, with a sahih isnad. The truth is that tatbiq (placing the hands between the knees in bowing) has been abrogated, as we said at 3588, and likewise the position of two people standing on the right and left of the imam, for they are instead to stand behind him.Munziri said, "Some scholars have said that the hadith of Ibn Masud is abrogated, because he only learned this prayer from the Prophet ﷺ while in Makkah, and it included tatbiq and other rulings that are now abandoned. This ruling is among them. So when the Prophet ﷺ came to Madinah, he abandoned it."The narration of Harun bin Antara will come at 4030, and see also 4272 and 4311.
