The Prophet ﷺ used to seek refuge from miserliness, cowardice, the punishment of the grave, decrepit old age, and the trial of the heart.Waki said, "The trial of the heart means that a man dies," and Waki mentioned that it refers to a sin from which one has not repented.
حدثنا وكيع عن إسرائيل عن أبي إسحاق عن عمرو بن ميمون
أن النبي ﷺ كان يتعوذ من البخل والجبن وعذاب القبر وأرذل العمر وفتنة الصدر قال وكيع فتنة الصدر أن يموت الرجل وذكر وكيع الفتنة لم يتب منها
Its chain of transmission is sahih. This is a repetition of 145, but there he mentioned "the evil of deeds" instead of "the most decrepit stage of life," along with his statement "the trial of the chest," and so on. He means that Waki interpreted it as meaning that a man dies in a trial from which he has not repented. But it appears that Imam Ahmad was uncertain about the exact wording that Waki used, so he alluded to it by saying, "and Waki mentioned the trial," and so on.
