We spoke at length with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one night, then we came to him in the morning, and he said, "The prophets were shown to me last night with their nations. A prophet would pass by with three followers, another prophet with a small band, another with a few men, and another with no one at all, until Musa passed by me with a great multitude from the Children of Israil. They impressed me, so I asked, 'Who are these?'I was told, 'This is your brother Musa, and with him are the Children of Israil.'I asked, 'Where is my own nation?'I was told, 'Look to your right.' I looked, and there were the hills, blocked from view by the faces of men. Then I was told, 'Look to your left.' I looked, and the horizon was filled with the faces of men.I was asked, 'Are you pleased?'I said, 'I am pleased, my Lord. I am pleased, my Lord.'Then I was told, 'Among these are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning.'"The Prophet ﷺ said, "May my father and mother be ransomed for you. If you are able to be among the seventy thousand, do so. If you fall short of that, then be among the people of the hills. If you fall short of that, then be among the people of the horizon, for I saw people there crowding together."Ukashah bin Mihsan stood up and said, "Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah that He make me one of the seventy thousand."So he prayed for him. Then another man stood up and said, "Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah that He make me one of them."He replied, "Ukashah has beaten you to it."We then discussed among ourselves and said, "Who do you suppose these seventy thousand are? Perhaps they are people who were born into Islam and never associated anything with Allah until they died."Word of this reached the Prophet ﷺ, and he said, "They are those who do not seek to be cauterized, do not request ruqyah, do not believe in evil omens, and place their trust in their Lord."
Its isnad is sahih. It is found in Majma al-Zawaid 10:405–406, where it says, Ahmad narrated it with several chains, Bazzar narrated it more completely, and Tabarani and Abu Yaala narrated it with much abridgment, and one of the chains of Ahmad and Bazzar has narrators who are the narrators of the sahih. It will also come at length as 3987. Part of its meaning will also come abridged as 3819. Hafiz has pointed out in Fath al-Bari 11:352 and following to Ahmad's two lengthy narrations, this one and 3987, and pointed out that it is found in Ahmad and Bazzar with a sahih chain. Its meaning has also already passed from the hadith of Ibn Abbas, 2448, 2449.Al-katibah, with the kaf either with damma or fatha, means a densely packed group of people or others. Al-dhirab, with the dhal carrying kasra and a light unstressed ra, means the small hills, its singular being dhirb, with the dhal carrying fatha and the ra carrying kasra.
