Abdullah bin Masud reported,

Saad bin Muaz set out to perform the lesser pilgrimage, staying as a guest of Umaya bin Khalaf bin Safwan. Whenever Umaya traveled to Syria and passed through Madinah, he would stay with Saad.Umaya said to Saad, "Wait until midday, when people are distracted, then go and circle the Kaaba."So while Saad was making his rounds, Abu Jahl came upon him and said, "Who is this circling the Kaaba in safety?"Saad answered, "I am Saad."Abu Jahl said, "You circle the Kaaba in safety when you people have given shelter to Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings?"The two of them fell to quarreling, and Umaya said to Saad, "Do not raise your voice against Abu Hakam, for he is the chief of the people of this valley."Saad said to him, "By Allah, if you prevent me from circling the House, I will cut off your trade route to Syria."Umaya kept saying, "Do not raise your voice against Abu Hakam," and he kept holding him back, until Saad grew angry and said, "Leave us alone, for I have heard Muhammad claim that he will kill you."Umaya said, "Me?""Yes," said Saad.Umaya said, "By Allah, Muhammad does not lie."When they had gone out, Umaya returned to his wife and said, "Do you know what the man from Yathrib said to me?" And he told her about it.Then, when the alarm was raised and the people set out for Badr, his wife said, "Do you not remember what your friend from Yathrib told you?" So he wanted to stay behind, but Abu Jahl said to him, "You are one of the nobles of this valley, so ride out with us for a day or two." So he rode out with them, and Allah killed him. عز وجلIn another version, the narrator said that Umaya returned to Umm Safwan and said, "Do you know what my friend from Yathrib said?"She asked, "What did he say?"He replied, "He claims that he heard Muhammad claim that he will kill me."She said, "By Allah, Muhammad does not lie."And when they set out for Badr, and he carried on with the account.
