Abdullah bin Masud reported,

Saad bin Muaz set out to perform Umrah and stayed as a guest with Safwan bin Umaya bin Khalaf. Whenever Umaya traveled to Sham and passed by Madinah, he would stay with Saad.Umaya said to Saad, "Wait until midday, when people are heedless, then go and perform tawaf."While Saad was performing tawaf, Abu Jahl came up to him and asked, "Who is this performing tawaf around the Kaabah safely?"Saad replied, "I am Saad."Abu Jahl said, "You perform tawaf around the Kaabah safely while you have given shelter to Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him?"They began to quarrel. Umaya said to Saad, "Do not raise your voice against Abu Hakam, for he is the chief of the people of the valley."Saad said to him, "By Allah, if you prevent me from performing tawaf around the House, I will cut off your trade route to Sham."Umaya kept saying, "Do not raise your voice against Abu Hakam," and he tried to restrain him. Saad grew angry and said, "Leave us alone. I heard Muhammad claim that he is going to kill you."Umaya asked, "Me?"Saad replied, "Yes."Umaya said, "By Allah, Muhammad does not lie."When they left, Umaya returned to his wife and said, "Do you know what the man from Yathrib said to me?" Then he told her.When the call to arms came and they were setting out for Badr, his wife said, "Do you not remember what your brother from Yathrib said?" So he wanted not to go out.But Abu Jahl said to him, "You are one of the nobles of the valley, so travel with us for a day or two." So he went with them, and Allah killed him.

عن عبد الله قال

انطلق سعد بن معاذ معتمرا فنزل على صفوان بن أمية بن خلف وكان أمية إذا انطلق إلى الشام فمر بالمدينة نزل على سعد فقال أمية لسعد انتظر حتى إذا انتصف النهار وغفل الناس انطلقت فطفت فبينما سعد يطوف إذ أتاه أبو جهل فقال من هذا يطوف بالكعبة آمنا قال سعد أنا سعد فقال أبو جهل تطوف بالكعبة آمنا وقد آويتم محمدا عليه الصلاة والسلام فتلاحيا فقال أمية لسعد لا ترفعن صوتك على أبي الحكم فإنه سيد أهل الوادي فقال له سعد والله إن منعتني أن أطوف بالبيت لأقطعن إليك متجرك إلى الشأم فجعل أمية يقول لا ترفعن صوتك على أبي الحكم وجعل يمسكه فغضب سعد فقال دعنا منك فإني سمعت محمدا يزعم أنه قاتلك قال إياي قال نعم قال والله ما يكذب محمد فلما خرجوا رجع إلى امرأته فقال أما علمت ما قال لي اليثربي فأخبرها فلما جاء الصريخ وخرجوا إلى بدر قالت امرأته أما تذكر ما قال أخوك اليثربي فأراد أن لا يخرج فقال له أبو جهل إنك من أشراف الوادي فسر معنا يوما أو يومين فسار معهم فقتله الله عز وجل
