When the prohibition of wine was revealed, Umar said, "O Allah, give us a clear and decisive ruling concerning wine."So this verse in Surah al-Baqarah was revealed, "They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, 'In them is great sin'" [Baqarah 2:219].Umar
was summoned and the verse was recited to him. He said, "O Allah, give us a clear and decisive ruling concerning wine."Then the verse in Surah an-Nisa was revealed, "O you who believe, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated" [Nisa 4:43]. After this, whenever the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ caller announced the establishment of the prayer, he would proclaim that no intoxicated person should come near the prayer.Umar
was summoned and the verse was recited to him. He said, "O Allah, give us a clear and decisive ruling concerning wine."Then the verse in Surah al-Maidah was revealed. Umar
was summoned and it was recited to him. When the reciter reached "So will you not desist?" [Maidah 5:91], Umar
said, "We desist, we desist."
Its isnad is sahih. Ibn Kathir mentioned it in his Tafsir 1:499–500, 3:226, and said, "It was likewise narrated by Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, and Nasai through various routes from Abu Ishaq, and it was also narrated by Ibn Abu Hatim and Ibn Mardawayh through the route of Thawri, from Abu Ishaq, from Abu Maysara, whose name was Amr bin Shurahbil Hamdani Kufi, from Umar, and this is the only report he has from him. But Abu Zura said, 'He did not hear from him.' And Allah knows best. Ali bin Madini said, 'This isnad is sound and sahih.' Tirmidhi graded it sahih."Ibn Abu Hatim added, after the words "We have stopped," the addition, "Indeed it takes away wealth and takes away the mind."As for Abu Zura's statement that Abu Maysara did not hear from Umar, I find no basis for it, for Abu Maysara was not known for tadlis, and he was an early Follower who had lived through both the pre-Islamic era and Islam, and he died in the year 63.In Ibn Saad's Tabaqat 6:73, from Abu Ishaq, he said, "Abu Maysara instructed his brother Arqam, 'Do not inform any of the people of my death, and let Shurayh, the judge and leader of the Muslims, lead the prayer over me.'"Shurayh Kindi was appointed judge over Kufa by Umar, and he remained in that position for sixty years, so Abu Maysara was earlier than him.
