A man brought his nephew to Ibn Masud and said, "This is my nephew, and he has been drinking."Abdullah said, "I know of the first legal punishment carried out in Islam. A woman stole, and her hand was cut off. The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed greatly because of that, and then he recited, 'Let them pardon and overlook. Would you not love that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful' [Nur 24:22]."
حدثنا يزيد أخبرنا المسعودي عن يحيى بن الحارث الجابر
أتى رجل ابن مسعود بابن أخ له فقال إن هذا ابن أخي وقد شرب فقال عبد الله لقد علمت أول حد كان في الإسلام امرأة سرقت فقطعت يدها فتغير لذلك وجه رسول الله ﷺ تغيرا شديدا ثم قال {وليعفوا وليصفحوا ألا تحبون أن يغفر الله لكم والله غفور رحيم}

Its isnad is daif, due to the weakness of Abu Majid, and we have discussed him in detail at 3585. Yahya bin Harith Jabir, is Yahya bin Abdullah bin Harith, attributed to his grandfather. The hadith was narrated by Hakim in similar but abbreviated form, 4:382-383, through Ahmad's route in the Musnad, from Muhammad bin Jafar, from Shubah, from Yahya Jabir, which is the same route that will come at 4168, and he said, "Its isnad is sahih, though the two of them (Bukhari and Muslim) did not narrate it." Dhahabi remained silent on this, neither agreeing nor objecting. It will also come with the same meaning at 3977. It is found in Majma al-Zawaid with several narrations, 6:275-286, where it is attributed to the Musnad and Abu Yaala, and its defect is identified as the weakness of Abu Majid.
