The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to be brought captives, and he would give an entire household together to one person, disliking that they be separated from one another.
حدثنا وكيع حدثنا سفيان عن جابر عن القاسم بن عبد الرحمن عن أبيه
وكان رسول الله ﷺ يؤتى بالسبي فيعطي أهل البيت جميعا كراهية أن يفرق بينهم
Its chain of transmission is daif because of the weakness of Jabir Jafi. Qasim is Ibn Abdul-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Masud, Masudi, the judge. He is trustworthy, one of the younger generation of the Followers, and he served as a judge in the time of Umar bin Abdul-Aziz. Bukhari gave his biography in al-Kabir 4/158–159. It is reported from Muharib bin Dithar, who said, "We accompanied Qasim bin Abdul-Rahman, and he surpassed us in three things, in the length of his silence, in the beauty of his character, and in the generosity of his spirit."His father, Abdul-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Masud, was a trustworthy Follower with few hadiths to his credit. There is some discussion about whether he actually heard from his father, but the view I consider stronger is that he did hear from him, which is also the position favored by Bukhari in al-Tarikh al-Saghir, page 40. Bukhari reported a story with its chain from Ibn Khuthaym Makki, in which Abdul-Rahman said, "I was with my father." Bukhari then said, "Shuba said, Abdul-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Masud did not hear from his father." But the report of Ibn Khuthaym is, in my view, more likely to be correct.Ibn Majah related this hadith, 2/17, through Waki.As for "the captives," it means slaves. He means that in the distribution of spoils, relatives among the slaves should not be separated, just as separating them was forbidden in cases of sale, as already mentioned in the hadith of Ali bin Abu Talib, numbers 760, 800, and 1045.In both original manuscripts here the word appears as "bil-shay" with the letter shin and a final hamza. However, we have preferred to adopt what appears in Ibn Majah, because he placed it under a chapter heading on the prohibition of separating captives, and mentioned after it the hadith of Ali and the hadith of Abu Musa Ashari on the prohibition of that. This confirms that the word "al-shay" in the two original manuscripts here is a scribal error.
