The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said one day, "Be truly modest before Allah , with the modesty He deserves."We replied, "Messenger of Allah, we are modest, praise be to Allah."He said, "That is not what I mean. Whoever is truly modest before Allah, with the modesty He deserves, let him guard his head and what it contains, let him guard his stomach and what it holds, let him remember death and decay, and whoever desires the Hereafter abandons the adornment of this world. Whoever does this has been truly modest before Allah
, with the modesty He deserves."
Its isnad is daif. Aban bin Ishaq Asadi is trustworthy, Ajli deemed him trustworthy, Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators, and Bukhari gave his biography in al-Kabir 1/1/53, mentioning no criticism of him.As for Sabbah bin Muhammad bin Abu Hazim Ajli Ahmasi, Ibn Hibban weakened him severely, saying, "He was among those who narrated fabricated reports from trustworthy narrators," which is excessive. Aqeeli said, "There is error in his hadith, and he raises reports that should be stopped at the companion level to the level of the Prophet." Dhahabi said in al-Mizan, "He raised two hadiths that are actually the words of Abdullah," meaning this one and the one after it.This hadith was narrated by Tirmidhi (3:305), who said, "It is a gharib hadith, we only know it through this route, from the hadith of Aban bin Ishaq from Sabbah bin Muhammad." It was also narrated by Hakim in al-Mustadrak (4:323), but he named its narrator Sabbah bin Muharib, which is a strange error, for Sabbah bin Muharib has no narration in this hadith, nor does he belong to this generation, rather he came later than Sabbah bin Muhammad. The hadith is undoubtedly that of Sabbah bin Muhammad.Even more strange is that Dhahabi agreed with him in naming him Sabbah bin Muharib, and in grading the hadith sahih!
