The prayer was called in the mosque, and we came walking alongside Abdullah bin Masud. When the people bowed, Abdullah bowed and we bowed with him while still walking. A man passed in front of him and said, "Peace be upon you, Abu Abdul-Rahman."Abdullah, while bowing, replied, "Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth."When he finished the prayer, some of the people asked him, "Why did you say, 'Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth,' when the man greeted you?"He answered, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Among the signs of the Hour is that greetings will be given only to those one knows.'"

أقيمت الصلاة في المسجد فجئنا نمشي مع عبد الله بن مسعود فلما ركع الناس ركع عبد الله وركعنا معه ونحن نمشي فمر رجل بين يديه فقال السلام عليك يا أبا عبد الرحمن فقال عبد الله وهو راكع صدق الله ورسوله فلما انصرف سأله بعض القوم لم قلت حين سلم عليك الرجل صدق الله ورسوله قال إني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول إن من أشراط الساعة إذا كانت التحية على المعرفة

Its isnad is hasan. Mujalid is Ibn Saeed. Amir is Shaybi. The meaning of the hadith will come at greater length with another isnad, no. 3870. Haythami mentioned the longer hadith in Majma al-Zawaid 7:328-329, noted the differences among its narrations, attributed it to Ahmad, and part of it to Bazzar, and likewise to Tabarani, then said, "The men of Ahmad and Bazzar are the men of the Sahih."In Muwatta 1:179, Malik states that it reached him that Abdullah bin Masud used to move slowly while riding. I have not found anyone who traced this report back to its source, neither Suyuti nor Zarqani 1:297, nor did Ibn Abdul-Barr mention it in al-Tamhid. So its connection can be established from the Musnad.
