The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Let none of you be kept from his pre-dawn meal by Bilal's call to prayer, for he calls out," or he said, "he announces it so that the one praying among you may return and the one sleeping may awaken. It is not until the dawn appears like this," and he closed his hand and raised it, "but rather until it appears like this," and Yahya spread apart his two index fingers.Abu Abdul-Rahman said, "This hadith I did not hear from anyone."
حدثنا يحيى عن التيمي عن أبي عثمان
قال رسول الله ﷺ لا يمنعن أحدكم أذان بلال عن سحوره فإنه يؤذن أو قال ينادي ليرجع قائمكم وينتبه نائمكم ليس أن يقول هكذا وضم يده ورفعها ولكن حتى يقول هكذا وفرق يحيى بين السبابتين قال أبو عبد الرحمن هذا الحديث لم أسمعه من أحد
Its isnad is sahih. Bukhari narrated it in 13:201 through Yahya, in 2:86–87 through Zuhayr, and in 9:385–386 through Yazid bin Zuray, all three from Sulayman Taymi. Muslim, Abu Dawud, Nasai, and Ibn Majah also narrated it, as mentioned in Dhakhair 4773.Regarding "so that the one standing among you may return" (li-yarjia qaimukum), "raja'a" is a trilateral verb used both intransitively and transitively. One says "raja'a Zayd" (Zayd returned) and "raja'tu Zaydan" (I brought Zayd back). The Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari 2:86, "According to this, whoever transmits it with the damma vowel and doubling has erred, for it would then come from tarjee, which is repetition, and that is not what is meant here. Rather its meaning is that the one standing, that is, the one exerting himself in devotion, is brought back to his rest, so that he may rise for the dawn prayer energetically, or so that someone who needs to fast may take suhoor, and to wake the sleeper so that he may prepare for it with ghusl and the like."As for "yunabbihu" (wakes), with the doubling of the ba, it is from tanbih (waking someone up). In copy ح it appears as "yantabihu" (wakes up on his own), but we have adopted what is in copy ك, which agrees with the narrations of Bukhari.The statement of Abu Abdul-Rahman, who is Abdullah bin Ahmad, following the hadith, "I did not hear this hadith from anyone," means that he did not hear it from any teacher other than his father, the Imam, may Allah have mercy on him.
