The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The needy person is not the one who goes around begging, turned away with a date or two, or a morsel or two. Rather, the truly needy person is the one who refrains from asking, who does not beg from people, and whose condition goes unnoticed so that no one gives him charity."
حدثنا أبو معاوية حدثنا إبراهيم بن مسلم الهجري عن أبي الأحوص
قال رسول الله ﷺ ليس المسكين بالطواف ولا بالذي ترده التمرة ولا التمرتان ولا اللقمة ولا اللقمتان ولكن المسكين المتعفف الذي لا يسأل الناس شيئا ولا يفطن له فيتصدق عليه
Its isnad is daif, due to the weakness of Ibrahim bin Muslim Hijri, as we explained in 3623. The hadith is in Majma al-Zawaid 3:92, where it says, "Ahmad narrated it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih!" This is what he said, but Hijri was never among the narrators of the Sahih. In fact, none of the authors of the six books included him except Ibn Majah, as is understood from Tahdheeb.The wording of the hadith itself is sahih, as narrated from Abu Hurairah by Ahmad, the two Shaykhs, Abu Dawud, and Nasai, as noted in Jami Sagheer 7585.
