Abdullah bin Masud reported,

Abdullah reported that on the day of Badr, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What do you say about these captives?"Abu Bakr said, "Messenger of Allah, they are your own people and your own kin. Spare them and be patient with them. Perhaps Allah will grant them repentance."Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, they drove you out and called you a liar. Bring them forward and strike off their heads."Abdullah bin Rawaha said, "Messenger of Allah, look for a valley full of firewood, put them into it, and then set it ablaze over them."Abbas said, "You have severed your own ties of kinship."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then went inside without giving them any answer. Some people said, "He will take Abu Bakr's view." Others said, "He will take Umar's view." And others said, "He will take Abdullah bin Rawaha's view."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to them and said, "Allah softens the hearts of some men so that they become softer than milk, and Allah hardens the hearts of some men so that they become harder than stone. Your likeness, Abu Bakr, is that of Ibrahim عليه السلام, who said, 'Whoever follows me is of me, and whoever disobeys me, You are indeed Forgiving and Merciful' [Ibrahim 14:36]. And your likeness, Abu Bakr, is that of Isa, who said, 'If You punish them, they are Your servants, and if You forgive them, You are indeed the Mighty, the Wise' [Maidah 5:118]. And your likeness, Umar, is that of Nuh, who said, 'My Lord, do not leave a single one of the disbelievers on the earth' [Nuh 71:26]. And your likeness, Umar, is that of Musa, who said, 'My Lord, harden their hearts so that they will not believe until they see the painful punishment.' You are in need, so let none of them get away except by ransom or by a stroke to the neck."Abdullah said, "I spoke up and said, 'Messenger of Allah, except for Suhayl bin Bayda, for I have heard him speak of Islam.'"The Prophet fell silent. Abdullah said, "I have never known a day on which I was more afraid that stones would fall on me from the sky than that day, until he finally said, 'Except for Suhayl bin Bayda.'"Then Allah عز وجل revealed, "It is not for a prophet to have captives until he has thoroughly subdued the land. You desire the goods of this world, while Allah desires the Hereafter, and Allah is Mighty and Wise," up to His words, "Had it not been for a decree from Allah that had already gone forth, a terrible punishment would have afflicted you for what you took" [Anfal 8:67–68].He said, "Except for Suhayl bin Bayda." And regarding Abu Bakr's words, another version has it that Abu Bakr said, "Messenger of Allah, they are your kindred, your root, and your people. Pardon them, and Allah may rescue them from the Fire through you." And Abdullah bin Rawaha said, "Messenger of Allah, you are in a valley full of firewood, so set it ablaze and then throw them into it." At that Abbas said, "May Allah sever your ties of kinship."
