Zaynab Thaqafiya reported,

Whenever Abdullah returned from attending to some need and reached the door, he would clear his throat and spit, not wanting to come upon us suddenly while we were doing something he might dislike. She said, "One day he came and cleared his throat. I had with me an old woman who was reciting incantations over me to cure me of erysipelas, so I hid her under the bed. He entered and sat down beside me, and he saw a string around my neck."He asked, "What is this string?"I replied, "A string on which an incantation has been recited for me."She said, He took it and cut it off, then said, "The family of Abdullah has no need of polytheism. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Incantations, amulets, and love-charms are polytheism.'"She said, I said to him, "Why do you say this? My eye used to discharge, and I would go regularly to such-and-such a Jewish man who would recite an incantation over it, and whenever he did so, it would settle down."He said, "That was only the work of Satan. He was poking it with his hand, and when the incantation was recited, he stopped. It would have been enough for you to say what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say, 'Remove the harm, Lord of mankind. Heal, for You are the Healer. There is no healing but Your healing, a healing that leaves behind no illness.'"
