I was walking with Abdullah at Mina when Uthman met him. Uthman stood with him to converse, and said to him, "Abu Abdul-Rahman, shall we not marry you to a young girl who might remind you of the days of your youth?"Abdullah replied, "If you say that, then indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to us, 'Young men, whoever among you can afford marriage, let him marry, for it lowers the gaze and guards the private parts. And whoever cannot, let him fast, for fasting is a shield for him.'"
Its chain of transmission is sahih. The raised part of it was narrated by the authors of the six books, as in al-Muntaqa 3411 and Dhakhair al-Mawarith 4910. The raised part will also come at 4035.Al-baah, Ibn Athir said, it means marriage and wedlock, and it is said as al-baah or al-bah. It was said to be so named because whoever marries a woman gives her a dwelling, and it was also said that it is because a man settles among his family, that is, he takes his ease, just as he settles into his dwelling.Al-wija, with a kasrah on the waw, Ibn Athir said, it means crushing the animal's testicles severely enough to remove the desire for intercourse, and in its effect it is treated like castration. He meant that fasting cuts off marriage just as al-wija cuts it off.In one manuscript it reads "fa-inna lahu", but the correct reading is "fa-innahu lahu", as we have established from K.
