Its chain of transmission is sahih. Abu Muamar is Abdullah bin Sakhbara al-Azdi, a well-known trustworthy successor. Ibn Kathir cited this hadith in his tafsir 8:129 from this very place, and said, "This is how Bukhari and Muslim narrated it from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna with this chain, and they both reported it also from the hadith of Amash, from Ibrahim, from Abu Muamar Abdullah bin Sakhbara, from Ibn Masud, with this chain."The splitting of the moon is one of the cosmic miracles that the atheists of our age deny, following the lead of their masters among the orientalists and missionaries, and thereby rejecting the truthful signs reported by this nation, which is the best nation brought forth for mankind.Hafiz bin Kathir said in his tafsir 8:127, "This took place in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, as is reported in the widely transmitted hadiths with sahih chains. It has been established in the Sahih collections, from Ibn Masud, that he said, 'Five things have already come to pass, the Romans, the smoke, the binding, the seizing, and the moon.' This is a matter agreed upon among the scholars, that the splitting of the moon occurred during the time of the Prophet ﷺ, and that it was one of the dazzling miracles."He also said in his Tarikh 3:118, "The Muslims are unanimous that this occurred during his time, peace and blessings be upon him, and the widely transmitted hadiths report it through numerous routes that yield certainty for whoever examines and studies them closely." He then mentioned many of the hadiths and their routes concerning this, both in the tafsir and in the Tarikh.
