We were waiting for Abdullah bin Masud in the mosque to come out to us when Yazid bin Muawiya, meaning al-Nakhai, came to us and said, "Shall I go and check? If he is at home, perhaps I can bring him out to you."He went and then came back to us, stood before us, and said, "He has been told of your presence, but what keeps him from coming out to you is his dislike of boring you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to space out his admonitions over the days, out of concern that we might grow weary."
حدثنا سفيان قال سليمان
كنا ننتظر عبد الله بن مسعود في المسجد يخرج علينا فجاءنا يزيد بن معاوية يعني النخعي قال فقال ألا أذهب فأنظر فإن كان في الدار لعلي أن أخرجه إليكم فجاءنا فقام علينا فقال إنه ليذكر لي مكانكم فما آتيكم كراهية أن أملكم لقد كان رسول الله ﷺ يتخولنا بالموعظة في الأيام كراهية السآمة علينا
Its isnad is sahih. Sulayman is Amash. Shaqiq is Abu Waail. Bukhari related it in an abridged form, 1:149–150, from the route of Thawri, from Amash, and Hafiz pointed to this narration in the Musnad in Fath al-Bari. Bukhari also related it at length, 11:194–195, from Umar bin Hafs, from his father, from Amash. Muslim also related it, as mentioned in Fath al-Bari.Yazid bin Muawiya Nakhai. Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari, He was a Kufan successor, trustworthy and devout. Ajli mentioned that he belonged to the generation of Rabi bin Khuthaym. Bukhari mentioned in his Tarikh [2/355/4] that he was killed while fighting as a warrior in Faris, apparently during the caliphate of Uthman. He is not mentioned in the Sahihayn except in this one place, and I do not know of any other narration from him."Yatakhawwaluna" (he used to choose his times for us). In Fath al-Bari, Khattabi said, al-khail, with the dotted letter, means the one who manages and looks after wealth. It is said, "khala the wealth, yakhuluhu, takhawwulan," when he looks after it and puts it in order. The meaning here is that he used to watch for suitable times when reminding us, and did not do so every day, so that we would not grow weary.
