Umar bin Khattab reported,

Allah sent Muhammad ﷺ with the truth and revealed the Book to him. Among what was revealed to him was the verse of stoning. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ carried out stoning, and we carried it out after him.Then he said, "We used to recite, 'Do not turn away from your fathers, for it is disbelief on your part,' or, 'It is disbelief on your part to turn away from your fathers.'"Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not extol me as the son of Maryam was extolled. I am only a servant, so say, 'The servant of Allah and His Messenger.'"Sometimes Muamar said, "as the Christians extolled the son of Maryam."

حدثنا عبد الرزاق حدثنا معمر عن الزهري عن عبيد الله بن عبد الله بن عتبة بن مسعود عن ابن عباس

عن عمر رضي الله عنه أنه قال

إن الله عز وجل بعث محمدا ﷺ بالحق وأنزل معه الكتاب فكان مما أنزل عليه آية الرجم فرجم رسول الله ﷺ ورجمنا بعده ثم قال قد كنا نقرأ ولا ترغبوا عن آبائكم فإنه كفر بكم أو إن كفرا بكم أن ترغبوا عن آبائكم ثم إن رسول الله ﷺ قال لا تطروني كما أطري ابن مريم وإنما أنا عبد فقولوا عبده ورسوله وربما قال معمر كما أطرت النصارى ابن مريم
