Najdah al-Haruri wrote to Ibn Abbas asking him about killing children, and whether women used to be present at battle with the Prophet ﷺ, and whether he would assign them a share of the spoils.Yazid bin Hurmuz said, "I was the one who wrote Ibn Abbas's letter to Najdah."He wrote to him, "You wrote asking me about killing children, and you say that the learned man, the companion of Musa, killed the boy. If you knew about children what that learned man knew, you could kill them. But you do not know, so keep away from them, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade killing them. You also wrote asking me about women, whether they used to be present at battle with the Prophet ﷺ and whether he would assign them a share. They did indeed attend with the Prophet ﷺ, but as for assigning them a fixed share, he did not do so. He would, however, give them something from the spoils."
Its isnad is sahih. Yazid bin Hurmuz was a trustworthy tabii, one of the sons of the Persians who sat with Abu Hurairah, and he is not the same as Yazid Farsi, as we explained at 399. The hadith appears in shortened form at 2812 and in fuller form at 3264, and see also 3297.
