Abis bin Rabia reported,

I saw Umar come to the Black Stone and say, "By Allah, I know well that you are merely a stone that can neither harm nor benefit. Had I not seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kiss you, I would not kiss you." Then he drew near and kissed it.

رأيت عمر رضي الله عنه أتى الحجر فقال أما والله إني لأعلم أنك حجر لا تضر ولا تنفع ولولا أني رأيت رسول الله ﷺ قبلك ما قبلتك ثم دنا فقبله
