Humayd bin Abdul-Rahman reported,

Ibn Abbas narrated to us in Basra, saying, "I was the first to reach Umar when he was stabbed."Umar said, "Remember three things from me, for I fear the people may not reach me in time. As for me, I have given no ruling on the inheritance of one who leaves neither parent nor child, I have appointed no successor over the people, and every slave I own is free."The people said to him, "Appoint a successor."He replied, "Whichever of the two I do, one better than me has already done it. If I leave the matter to the people, the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, left it to them. And if I appoint a successor, then one better than me appointed a successor, Abu Bakr ."Ibn Abbas continued, "I said to him, 'Receive the good news of Paradise. You kept the company of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and kept it long, you took charge of the affairs of the believers and were strong in it, and you discharged the trust.'"Umar said, "As for your giving me good news of Paradise, by Allah, if I had..." Affan's version reads, "No, by Allah, besides whom there is no god, if I possessed the world and all that is in it, I would ransom myself with it from the terror that lies ahead of me, before I learn the outcome. As for what you said about the affairs of the believers, by Allah, I wish it had come out even, neither for me nor against me. And as for what you mentioned of the company of the Prophet of Allah ﷺ, that is indeed so."

حدثنا ابن عباس بالبصرة قال أنا أول من أتى عمر رضي الله عنه حين طعن فقال احفظ عني ثلاثا فإني أخاف أن لا يدركني الناس أما أنا فلم أقض في الكلالة قضاء ولم أستخلف على الناس خليفة وكل مملوك له عتيق فقال له الناس استخلف فقال أي ذلك أفعل فقد فعله من هو خير مني إن أدع إلى الناس أمرهم فقد تركه نبي الله عليه الصلاة والسلام وإن أستخلف فقد استخلف من هو خير مني أبو بكر رضي الله عنه فقلت له أبشر بالجنة صاحبت رسول الله ﷺ فأطلت صحبته ووليت أمر المؤمنين فقويت وأديت الأمانة فقال أما تبشيرك إياي بالجنة فوالله لو أن لي قال عفان فلا والله الذي لا إله إلا هو لو أن لي الدنيا بما فيها لافتديت به من هول ما أمامي قبل أن أعلم الخبر وأما قولك في أمر المؤمنين فوالله لوددت أن ذلك كفافا لا لي ولا علي وأما ما ذكرت من صحبة نبي الله ﷺ فذلك
