I spent the night at the home of my aunt Maymunah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up during the night, relieved himself, then washed his face and hands. He then went to the waterskin, untied its strap, and performed a moderate ablution, neither using too much water nor too little, yet still thorough. He then stood up to pray.I got up and stretched, not wanting him to see that I had been watching him. I performed ablution, and when he stood to pray, I stood on his left side. He took hold of my ear and turned me to his right side. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ completed thirteen rakahs of night prayer. Then he lay down and slept until he was breathing audibly, for whenever he slept he would breathe heavily. Then Bilal came and informed him of the prayer. He got up and prayed without performing ablution again. In his supplication he would say, "O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my sight, light in my hearing, light on my right, light on my left, light above me, light below me, light in front of me, light behind me, and grant me abundant light."Kurayb said, "And seven other things are in the chest." He said, "I met one of the sons of Abbas, who related them to me. He mentioned my sinews, my flesh, my blood, my hair, and my skin." He also mentioned two other qualities.
Its isnad is sahih, except for the statement of Kurayb, "and seven in the ark," etc., for its beginning is mursal, and the rest of it comes from an unknown narrator, who is one of the sons of Abbas. The hadith is given in longer form at 2559 and 2567, and see also 3061 and 3175. Ibn Athir said, By "the ark" he meant the ribs and what they contain, such as the heart, the liver, and other organs, likening it to the chest in which valuables are kept safe, meaning that it is something hidden, placed within the chest. The word "[not]" was mistakenly dropped from H, and the correction is from K.
