When the verse was revealed, "And do not approach the orphan's property except in the way that is best" [Anam 6:152], the people separated the orphans' property from their own, to the point that food would spoil and meat would rot. This was mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ, and then the verse was revealed, "And if you mix your affairs with theirs, they are your brothers. And Allah knows the corrupter from the reformer" [Baqarah 2:220]. So they mixed their affairs with theirs.

لما نزلت {ولا تقربوا مال اليتيم إلا بالتي هي أحسن} عزلوا أموال اليتامى حتى جعل الطعام يفسد واللحم ينتن فذكر ذلك للنبي ﷺ فنزلت {وإن تخالطوهم فإخوانكم والله يعلم المفسد من المصلح} قال فخالطوهم
