Abu Bakr bought a saddle from Azib for thirteen dirhams. Abu Bakr said to Azib, "Tell Bara to carry it to my house."Azib replied, "Not until you tell us what you did when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out and you were with him."Abu Bakr said, "We set out and traveled hard through the night, then pressed on through the day until midday came and the sun stood overhead. I cast my eyes about looking for some shade where we could take shelter, and I came upon a rock. I went toward it and found a patch of shade beside it. I leveled the ground for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and spread out a fur cloak for him, then said, 'Lie down and rest, Messenger of Allah.' So he lay down."Then I went out to see if I could spot anyone pursuing us, and I came across a shepherd with his flock. I asked, 'Whose man are you, boy?'"He said, 'I belong to a man of Quraysh,' and named him, and I recognized the name."I asked, 'Is there any milk in your flock?'"He said, 'Yes.'"I asked, 'Will you milk some for me?'"He said, 'Yes.'"I told him to do so, and he caught hold of one of the sheep. I told him to brush the dust off her udder, then to brush the dust off his hands. I had a small water skin with a cloth tied over its mouth, and he milked a little milk for me into a cup. I poured water on the cup until its bottom was cool, then brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and reached him just as he was waking up."I said, 'Drink, Messenger of Allah.' He drank until I was satisfied. Then I said, 'Is it time to move on?'"So we set off, and the people were searching for us. None of them caught up with us except Suraqa bin Malik bin Jushum, who came riding a horse of his."I said, 'Messenger of Allah, the pursuer has overtaken us.'"He said, 'Do not grieve. Indeed, Allah is with us.'"When he drew near to us, until there was only the length of one, two, or three spears between us, I said, 'Messenger of Allah, the pursuer has caught up with us,' and I wept."He said, 'Why are you weeping?'"I said, 'By Allah, I am not weeping for myself, I am weeping for you.'"So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ supplicated against him, saying, 'O Allah, deal with him for us as You will.' At that, his horse's legs sank into the solid ground up to her belly, and he leapt off her and said, 'Muhammad, I know this is your doing. Pray to Allah to deliver me from what I am in, and by Allah, I will throw off whoever comes pursuing behind me. Here is my quiver, take an arrow from it. You will pass by my camels and sheep in such-and-such a place, so take from them whatever you need.'"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I have no need of them.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ supplicated for him and he was released, and he went back to his companions."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued on, and I with him, until we reached Madinah. The people came out to meet him, going out into the streets and onto the rooftops. Servants and children rushed into the streets shouting, 'Allahu Akbar! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has come! Muhammad has come!' The people argued over which of them he would lodge with."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Tonight I will lodge with Banu Najjar, the maternal uncles of Abdul-Muttalib, to honor them with that.' When morning came, he went to where he had been directed."Bara bin Azib said, The first of the Muhajirun to come to us was Musab bin Umayr, of the clan of Banu Abd al-Dar. Then Ibn Umm Maktum, the blind man, of the clan of Banu Fihr, came to us. Then Umar bin Khattab came to us with twenty riders. We asked, "What has the Messenger of Allah ﷺ done?"He said, "He is following close behind me." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived, with Abu Bakr alongside him.Bara said, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not arrive until I had memorized several surahs from the Mufassal section.Israil said, Bara was from the Ansar, of the clan of Banu Haritha.
