Miswar bin Makhrama went in to visit Ibn Abbas during an illness, and Ibn Abbas was wearing a brocade garment.Miswar said, "Abu Abbas, what is this garment?"Ibn Abbas asked, "What is it?"Miswar replied, "This is istabraq, thick brocade silk."Ibn Abbas said, "By Allah, I did not realize. I do not think the Prophet ﷺ forbade this except as a means of preventing arrogance and haughtiness, and by the praise of Allah, we are not like that."Miswar then asked, "And what are these images on the brazier?"Ibn Abbas answered, "Do you not see that we have already burned them with fire?"When Miswar left, Ibn Abbas said, "Take this garment off me, and cut off the heads of these figures."They said, "Abu Abbas, if you took them to the market with their heads intact, they would sell better."He replied, "No," and ordered that their heads be cut off.
حدثنا أبو النضر عن ابن أبي ذئب
أن المسور بن مخرمة دخل على ابن عباس يعوده من وجع وعليه برد إستبرق فقلت يا أبا عباس ما هذا الثوب قال وما هو قال هذا الإستبرق قال والله ما علمت به وما أظن النبي ﷺ نهى عن هذا حين نهى عنه إلا للتجبر والتكبر ولسنا بحمد الله كذلك قال فما هذه التصاوير في الكانون قال ألا ترى قد أحرقناها بالنار فلما خرج المسور قال انزعوا هذا الثوب عني واقطعوا رءوس هذه التماثيل قالوا يا أبا عباس لو ذهبت بها إلى السوق كان أنفق لها مع الرأس قال لا فأمر بقطع رءوسها
