Abdullah bin Abu Mulayka reported,

I was with Abdullah bin Umar while we were waiting for the funeral procession of Umm Abban, daughter of Uthman bin Affan, and Amr bin Uthman was with him. Then Ibn Abbas came, led by his guide. I think his guide informed him of Ibn Umar's location, so he came and sat down beside me, with me between the two of them.Suddenly a sound of wailing came from the house, and Ibn Umar said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say that the deceased is punished because of his family's weeping over him." Abdullah stated this without qualification.Ibn Abbas said, "We were with the Commander of the Faithful, Umar, until when we reached al-Bayda, he saw a man resting in the shade of a tree. He said to me, 'Go and find out who that is.' So I went, and it turned out to be Suhayb. I returned to him and said, 'You commanded me to find out for you who that was, and it is Suhayb.' He said, 'Tell him to join us.' I said, 'His family is with him.' He said, 'Even if his family is with him.'"Ayub sometimes said, "Tell him to join us.""When we reached Medina, it was not long before the Commander of the Faithful was struck down. Suhayb came and cried, 'Oh my brother! Oh my companion!' Umar said, 'Do you not know, or have you not heard, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that the deceased is punished because of some of his family's weeping over him?'"Abdullah stated it without qualification, while Umar said "because of some of the weeping.""So I went to Ayesha and mentioned Umar's statement to her. She said, 'No, by Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ never said that the deceased is punished because of anyone's weeping. Rather, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that Allah عز وجل increases the punishment of the disbeliever because of his family's weeping over him. Indeed, it is Allah who makes one laugh and weep, "and no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another" [Anam 6:164].'"Ayub said that Ibn Abu Mulayka said, Qasim told me, "When Ayesha was informed of the statement of Umar and Ibn Umar, she said, 'You are reporting to me from people who are neither liars nor accused of lying, but hearing can err.'"
