Ibn Abu Adi in his version of the hadith said, "I came to Sham and met Abu Darda."He asked, "Where are you from?"I replied, "From the people of Kufa."He said, "Can you recite to me the recitation of Ibn Masud?"I said, "Yes."He said, "Then recite By the night when it covers."I recited, "By the night when it covers, and by the day when it shines forth" [Layl 92:1–2], "and the male and the female."He said, "This is exactly how I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite it." I think he said that he then laughed.
حدثنا إسماعيل حدثنا داود وابن أبي عدي عن داود عن الشعبي عن علقمة قال لقيت
ابن أبي عدي في حديثه فقدمت الشام فلقيت أبا الدرداء قال ممن أنت قلت من أهل الكوفة قال هل تقرأ علي قراءة ابن مسعود قلت نعم قال فاقرأ والليل إذا يغشى قلت {والليل إذا يغشى والنهار إذا تجلى} والذكر والأنثى قال هكذا سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقرؤها قال أحسبه قال فضحك
