Abu Darda reported,

I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Is there recitation in every prayer?"He answered, "Yes."A man from the Ansar said, "This has now been made obligatory."Abu Darda then turned to me, as I was the closest of the people to him, and said, "Nephew, I consider that when the imam leads the people in prayer, his recitation suffices them."

سألت رسول الله ﷺ أفي كل صلاة قراءة قال نعم فقال رجل من الأنصار وجبت هذه فالتفت إلي أبو الدرداء وكنت أقرب القوم منه فقال يا ابن أخي ما أرى الإمام إذا أم القوم إلا قد كفاهم
