Some men from my tribe asked me to question Saeed bin Musayab about a spear they would sharpen and plant in the ground, and by morning it would have killed a hyena. They wanted to know whether this counted as a proper slaughter.So I sat with Saeed bin Musayab, and there with him was an old man from Sham with a white head and beard. I asked Saeed about it, and he said to me, "Do you actually eat hyena?"I replied, "I have never eaten it, but some men from my tribe do eat it."He said, "Eating it is not lawful."Then the old man said, "Abdullah, shall I narrate to you a hadith I heard from Abu Darda, which he reported from the Prophet ﷺ?"I said, "Yes, please do."He said, "I heard Abu Darda say, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade every bird that snatches its prey, every form of plunder, every animal tied up and used as a target, and every predator with fangs.'"Saeed bin Musayab said, "He has spoken the truth."

أمرني ناس من قومي أن أسأل سعيد بن المسيب عن سنان يحددونه ويركزونه في الأرض فيصبح وقد قتل الضبع أتراه ذكاته قال فجلست إلى سعيد بن المسيب فإذا عنده شيخ أبيض الرأس واللحية من أهل الشام فسألته عن ذلك فقال لي وإنك لتأكل الضبع قال قلت ما أكلتها قط وإن ناسا من قومي ليأكلونها قال فقال إن أكلها لا يحل قال فقال الشيخ يا عبد الله ألا أحدثك بحديث سمعته من أبي الدرداء يرويه عن النبي ﷺ قال قلت بلى قال فإني سمعت أبا الدرداء يقول نهى رسول الله ﷺ عن كل ذي خطفة وعن كل نهبة وعن كل مجثمة وعن كل ذي ناب من السباع قال فقال سعيد بن المسيب صدق
