There was among us a man whose mother kept urging him to marry until he did, then she commanded him to divorce his wife. So he traveled to Abu Darda in Sham and said, "My mother kept pressing me until I married, and now she has ordered me to divorce."Abu Darda replied, "I am not one to tell you to divorce, nor am I one to tell you to keep her. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The parent is the middlemost gate of Paradise. So lose that gate or guard it.'"The narrator said, "He returned having divorced her."
حدثنا عبد الرزاق قال أخبرنا سفيان عن عطاء بن السائب
كان فينا رجل لم تزل به أمه أن يتزوج حتى تزوج ثم أمرته أن يفارقها فرحل إلى أبي الدرداء بالشام فقال إن أمي لم تزل بي حتى تزوجت ثم أمرتني أن أفارق قال ما أنا بالذي آمرك أن تفارق وما أنا بالذي آمرك أن تمسك سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول الوالد أوسط أبواب الجنة فأضع ذلك الباب أو احفظه قال فرجع وقد فارقها
