The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The best of people during times of tribulation are two: a man who withdraws to his property to worship his Lord and fulfill His rights, and a man holding the reins of his horse in the path of Allah, striking fear into the enemy as they strike fear into him."

Its isnad is hasan, because of Layth bin Abu Salim, who alone narrated this hadith. Tirmidhi related it from a man from Tawus in 4/473, number 2177, and said, "Hasan gharib," despite the fact that the narrator from Tawus is unknown. Perhaps he did not look only at the isnad but rather considered the overall wording and meaning of the hadith, for its meaning is found in Bukhari, 6/number 2786, Fath, in the chapter on jihad, and in Muslim, 3/1503, number 1888, in the chapter on leadership, both from Abu Saeed Khudri. It has already appeared at 17973, 11777, 11067, and 1473.
