By Allah, regarding me and Aws bin Samit, Allah revealed the opening of Surah al-Mujadilah.She said, "I was married to him, and he was a very old man whose temperament had grown bad and who had become irritable. One day he came in to me, and I answered him back about something, which made him angry, so he said, 'You are to me as the back of my mother.' Then he went out and sat in the assembly of his people for a while. After that he came back in to me, and behold, he wanted to be intimate with me."She said, "I told him, 'Never! By the One in whose hand is the soul of Khuwaylah, you shall not get to me after you have said what you said, until Allah and His Messenger judge between us with His ruling.' He sprang at me, but I refused him, and I overcame him in the way a woman can overcome a feeble old man, and I threw him off me."Then I went out to one of my neighbors and borrowed her clothes from her, then I went out until I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and sat before him. I told him what I had suffered from my husband, and I began to complain to him ﷺ about the bad temper I had to endure."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept saying, 'Khuwaylah, your cousin is an old man, so fear Allah concerning him.' By Allah, I had not yet left when Quran was revealed concerning me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was overcome by what used to come over him during revelation, and then it was lifted from him. He said to me, 'Khuwaylah, Allah has revealed concerning you and your husband.'"Then he recited to me, 'Allah has indeed heard the speech of the woman who pleads with you concerning her husband and complains to Allah, and Allah hears your dialogue. Indeed, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing,' up to His words, 'and for the disbelievers there is a painful punishment' [Mujadilah 58:1–4]."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said to me, 'Order him to free a slave.'"She said, "I said, 'By Allah, Messenger of Allah, he has nothing with which to free a slave.'"He said, "Then let him fast two consecutive months."She said, "I said, 'By Allah, Messenger of Allah, he is a very old man with no capacity for fasting.'"He said, "Then let him feed sixty poor people with a wasq of dates."She said, "I said, 'By Allah, Messenger of Allah, he does not have that either.'"She said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Then we will help him with a basket of dates.'"She said, "I said, 'And I, Messenger of Allah, will help him with another basket.'"He said, "You have done right and done well. Go and give it as charity on his behalf, then take good care of your cousin."She said, "And so I did."Saad said, "Al-araq is the large basket."
